ADMINISTRATION
If your loved one passed away with out a Will, then any assets belonging to him or her must be valued and transferred to heirs according to the Law (New York Estates, Powers and Trusts Law - EPTL).  

A Petition For Administration must be filed for the Court to appoint a representative, called an Administrator, to organize, manage and carry out the settling of the Estate. 

Once an Administrator is appointed, then the process of administering the estate begins.
