Citation: A command to appear in court regarding a petition or other proceeding.
SURROGATE'S COURT CITATIONS
After a Petition has been filed in Surrogate's Court, all interested parties must be served with notice of the process before the court.
This notice is called a Citation and it is issued by the clerk of the court.
In providing notice, the citation gives a party the opportunity to dispute the petition that is before the court. If a person signed a Waiver of Citation (or Waiver of Process), then he or she would not need to be served with a citation.
If you ever receive a Surrogate's Court Citation, then treat it very seriously.
Failing to appear can have an adverse effect on your rights.
